Supporting Black Student’s Success - the Black Early Learning Program

According to the latest Oregon Department of Education report, 81.1% of white students in Lane County graduated on time in 2023, while only 73.9% of Black students graduated. To address disparities like this for Black students in our local education systems, United Way and the Early Childhood Hub of Lane County partner with Lane Education Service District to facilitate the Black Early Learning program, part of the Lane African American/Black Student Success project, with the goal of equipping Black children to build a foundation for their future success.

Early Childhood Hub chosen to create blueprint for improving outcomes for children

If anything were possible, what would it take to ensure that every child, family, and community has an equitable opportunity to succeed?

As a strong convener of local early childhood work locally, the Early Childhood Hub of Lane County was selected as one of five organizations from across the state to design a Child Success Model blueprint, part of Oregon Health and Education Collaborative’s Upstream Initiative, to help answer this question.

“I felt hope”: New McKenzie Preschool Means More than Child Care to Upriver Community

In March 2023, the McKenzie Little Eagles Child Care center hosted an open house, offering community members and prospective parents the chance to tour their new facility in Blue River. For a community that’s weathered devastating challenges the last few years, the center offers more than simply child care - it stands as a symbol of resilience and hope.

New Funding Supports Strategy for Child Care Crisis

The lack of accessible, affordable child care in Lane County has long plagued families and employers, especially in the wake of the pandemic. Starting October 2022, the position of Child Care Strategist will tackle this complex issue head-on.
